Famco Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Famco Chimney Cap Installation: The Silver Spring Owner’s Guide

A properly fitted Famco chimney cap installed in Silver Spring typically runs between $340 and $620 depending on flue size, cap style, and whether the flue needs a mounting adapter. Most Famco cap replacements we do in Montgomery County are completed in a single visit, and we stock the common 8″ to 13″ galvanized and stainless-steel sizes on our trucks. Homeowners usually notice the problem after a windstorm sends the cap clattering into the yard, or when water starts dripping onto the firebox floor every spring thaw.

Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco caps fall into a few distinct series, and getting the match right matters more than most homeowners expect. The Wind Directional Cap (sometimes called the rotating or turbine-style cap) is common on Silver Spring’s 1960s and 1970s colonials with square clay flue tiles. The Standard Galvanized Cap with the single-bolt mounting band fits round metal flues found on many post-war bungalows near Four Corners. The Stainless Draft King series, heavier gauge with the welded skirt, is what we see most often on homes that had a liner upgrade in the last fifteen years.

To identify yours, check the underside of the cap for a stamped model number, usually on the mounting skirt. If the stamp’s rusted over, measure the flue opening outside diameter and note whether your flue is clay, metal, or lined. We carry both OEM Famco caps and quality equivalents from Gelco and Copperfield. For most Silver Spring installations, the Gelco equivalent matches the gauge and mounting geometry at a lower price point. The exception is the Wind Directional series, where the bearing assembly tolerances are tight enough that we recommend sticking with Famco OEM or the Copperfield match. We’re an independent service company, not affiliated with Famco, so we’ll tell you straight which makes sense for your setup.

Signs Your Famco Chimney Cap Is Failing

  • The cap is missing, tilted, or rattling in anything above a light breeze. Famco’s galvanized mounting bands fatigue after about twelve to fifteen years in Maryland’s freeze-thaw cycle. Once the band cracks at the adjustment slot, the cap lifts and the next good gust takes it.
  • Water staining on the firebox walls or a musty smell after rain. A cap with a rusted-through mesh screen or separated skirt seam lets water run straight down the flue. In Silver Spring’s heavy clay soils, that moisture has nowhere to go but into the surrounding masonry.
  • Birds, squirrels, or raccoons in the flue or fireplace. Famco caps use 5/8-inch mesh on most models, which is code-compliant for sparks but can corrode open at the weld points. A gap the width of a pencil is enough for a starling.
  • Downdraft smoke or cold-air backflow when the fireplace isn’t in use. The Wind Directional cap’s bearing assembly seizes with rust, or the directional hood gets bent by a falling branch. Either way, the cap stops doing the one job it was designed for.
  • Visible rust streaks down the chimney crown or exterior brick. Galvanized caps in Montgomery County’s acid-rain pattern typically show surface rust by year eight and through-rust by year twelve. Stainless models last longer but the spot welds at the screen joint can still fail.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Item Typical Range in Silver Spring
Famco or equivalent cap (galvanized, standard size) $180 - $280
Famco or equivalent cap (stainless steel) $260 - $420
Wind Directional cap (OEM or Copperfield match) $320 - $480
Mounting adapter or custom skirt (if flue is oversized or irregular) $60 - $140
Labor and installation $160 - $220
Total installed price $340 - $620

What drives the range: flue diameter (10-inch and 12-inch caps cost more than 8-inch), whether we need to fabricate a mounting adapter for an old terra-cotta flue with chipped corners, and whether the existing cap left rusted bolts that need extraction. We do a level-2 camera inspection before we quote, so you see what we see. The price we give is the price on the invoice. Every cap installation carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing, no arguing. If it leaks, shifts, or doesn’t draft right, we come back.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s what you can safely check yourself: whether the cap is actually missing or just shifted, whether the mounting band bolts are loose enough to hand-tighten, and whether there’s obvious rust-through on the mesh. Use binoculars from the ground. Don’t climb the roof.

Where DIY goes wrong: most Silver Spring homes with original Famco caps have the band mounted with seized bolts that shear off when you torque them. The replacement cap needs to sit level and centered over the flue, with proper clearances to combustible materials per Montgomery County code. Get that wrong and you’ve got a fire hazard or a cap that lifts in the next storm. We’ve also seen homeowners install a cap that’s the right diameter but wrong height, blocking the flue on fireplaces with a smoke shelf. Russell’s rule: “Tell me what the chimney needs. Then we fix that. Nothing more, nothing less.” If you want certainty, call (301) 479-9806 and we’ll sort it in one visit.
