Gelco Damper Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Damper Repair: The Silver Spring Owner’s Guide

Gelco damper repair in Silver Spring typically runs $280-$520 installed, depending on whether the throat plate, frame, or entire assembly needs replacement. We stock Gelco-compatible parts on our trucks and can usually complete the repair in a single visit. Most Silver Spring homeowners discover the problem on the first cold night in November, when the damper won’t open fully or refuses to seal shut, sending heat straight up the flue.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco manufactured throat dampers in several series over the decades, and the parts are not universally interchangeable. The most common units we see in Silver Spring homes are the Gelco cast-iron throat dampers from the 1980s and 1990s, typically marked with a model stamp on the frame’s left side, visible from the firebox with a flashlight. The critical measurement is the throat opening width, which for residential Gelco units usually falls between 24 and 36 inches in 2-inch increments. A 28-inch frame will not seat properly in a 30-inch throat, and forcing it cracks the lintel.

We carry both OEM Gelco replacement frames and plates, as well as aftermarket equivalents from Copperfield that match Gelco specs exactly. For older units where the original part is no longer manufactured, we fabricate a matched fit from Copperfield components on site. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Gelco, so we source whatever gets the repair done right without marking up brand names you don’t need.

Signs Your Gelco Damper Repair Is Failing

  • The handle turns but the plate doesn’t move. The linkage pin has corroded or the cotter pin has sheared off. This is the most common Gelco failure we see in Silver Spring’s older brick colonials, where decades of humid summers and heating-season condensation rust the steel linkage before the cast iron itself gives out.
  • You feel a cold draft even with the damper “closed.” The plate has warped or the frame has shifted, leaving a gap that lets outside air pour down. In the Woodside Park neighborhood, we’ve found this happens faster on north-facing chimneys where freeze-thaw cycles stress the metal.
  • The plate is stuck open and won’t budge. Creosote has glued the plate to the frame, or the pivot rod has seized in its bracket. This usually follows years of skipped sweeps and means the damper assembly needs removal for cleaning before any part can be assessed.
  • You hear grinding or scraping when operating the handle. The gear rack on the handle mechanism has worn teeth, or the plate has dropped out of alignment and is dragging against the frame. Continuing to force it will crack the cast-iron frame, turning a $320 repair into a $510 full replacement.
  • Smoke spills into the room on startup. The damper opens only partially, choking the flue. This can also indicate a blocked chimney, so we verify draft with a smoke pencil before condemning the damper itself.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Repair Type Typical Range What’s Included
Linkage/pin replacement $280-$340 New stainless linkage, cotter pins, handle adjustment, draft test
Plate replacement (OEM Gelco) $360-$440 Matched cast-iron plate, seal inspection, handle alignment
Full frame & plate assembly $440-$520 Complete removal, new frame and plate, masonry seating, draft verification

What drives the range is access. A Gelco damper in a standard Rumford-style fireplace with a clean smoke chamber takes less time than one buried behind a heatilator or tucked under a sloped chimney breast common in the 1950s ranches near Four Corners. We photograph everything before we quote, so you see what we see. The price we agree to is the price on the invoice. No surprises, no add-ons after we’re in your home.

Every Gelco damper repair carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the draw isn’t right or the seal fails, we come back. No paperwork to dig up, no argument.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here, and then there’s where DIY goes wrong. You can safely check whether the handle nut has loosened, or whether debris is blocking the track. A flashlight and a fireplace tool will tell you that much.

What you should not attempt is removing the damper plate or frame yourself. The assembly sits at the base of the flue, above the firebox, and the pivot rod is under spring tension on some Gelco models. A slipped wrench can send a cast-iron plate down into the firebox, cracking the brick or the plate itself. More critically, disturbing the frame without knowing the lintel’s condition can compromise the structural throat of the chimney. We’ve been called to three Silver Spring homes in the past two years where a homeowner’s “simple” damper removal turned into a lintel repair.

We carry Gelco-compatible parts on every truck, and most repairs finish in one visit. Call (301) 479-9806 when you’re ready, and we’ll schedule a time that works.
